Today is our 4 year wedding anniversary so I thought I would share with you how Raymond and I met because it’s my favorite story! When other people ask me, I can’t help but smile from ear to ear because it’s crazy how we were always destined to be together. Yes, I believe is soulmates.
We met in 2010. I was 17 and he was 19 (babies, I know!). I attended high school with a friend who he worked with at Best Buy. She mentioned to me one day, in graphic design class (never thought I would use that, but here I am), that she worked with a guy that she thought I would really like. She said, “he’s all about Jesus like you so I think you’d like each other”. Months went by and I didn’t really think much of it . Well, I was with that same friend on our way back from a John Mayer concert when I checked my Facebook and saw that I had a new friend request. I, out loud said, who is Raymond Ssschiraffa (people always ask us how to pronounce our last name so here it is, Si-ah-ra-ffa), she said, “that’s my friend, that’s the guy I told you about that I think you would really like remember?!?!”. I was like ooohh he’s hot! So naturally, I stalked his Facebook like a hawk. He then messaged me an we started talking for about a week before he invited me to his church on Sunday to meet (HA, I think that is so funny). I cannot explain it, and you may or may not believe me, but when I saw him I was in love. I guess the only way to put it is love at first sight (later he confirmed he felt the same way).
This is where it gets crazzzzzy.
1. We attended rival high schools and middle schools where I cheered at his football games ( I like to think that we both rubbed shoulders at least once in our lives before we met).
2. Our church’s were 3 blocks from each other, and we both knew the same people, but we had never met!!
It just goes to show that timing is everything. One week after we met in person, he told me he was going to marry me. Say whaaaat! Of course this came as a shock to me because at 17 I had never met anyone like him that would commit nonetheless say the word ‘marriage’, but I was game. He was in the youth leadership program at his church where he had just made a commitment to the team in January that he would not date anyone for a whole year to focus on the youth group. We met in March, so that totally back fired, lol! We did not officially become boyfriend and girlfriend until January 2011 so he did keep his promise…kinda.
I had plans to move to Dallas after graduating high school to attend Bible school and Raymond had interest in going to the same school. After he prayed about it and received confirmation from the Lord, we both moved to Dallas in August of 2011. Not together, him in the guys dorms and me in the girls dorms just in case you were wondering. This was by far the best decision for our lives . I am so happy and grateful that we were both able to learn the same things together and not only grow in the Lord but grow our relationship and build a steady foundation for our future.
After 3 years together it was time. We had looked at rings and picked one out (ladies, I definitely recommend you look at rings together. I know that some of you want him to surprise you but realize that this is the ring you may want to keep forever and you want to make sure you love it!). A few months passed by after we looked at rings and I was getting very antsy and impatient. He kept taking me on these really cute dates and I made sure my nails were done and I looked cute only to get dropped off at the end of the night with no ring on my finger! That happened every time we went on a date! Every time I sensed that it was going to happen…it wouldn’t. One day, I can’t remember what it was now, but Raymond bought something and it was expensive and I was so upset because he wasn’t saving for my ring, or so I thought. We got in argument that day about him not proposing (LOL oh my goodness I am so annoying)! That same day after I got off work, he picked me up and we went to a friends house for dinner. We both walked in and I went to chat with my friend in the kitchen (probably to tell her about our fight) and there was no food ready or anything so I thought that was strange. I walked to the living room and there he was with a look on his face and walked up to me and got on one knee! I was SOOOO surprised and I loved it! Naturally, I cried. He later told me he had been trying to propose and had the ring in his pocket but every time he got close he knew that I knew it was coming so he changed his plans. I know, I know I’m the worst! lol
We were married 9 months later in front of 330 friends and family. I am so grateful for my best friend and soulmate, he is simply the best person I know and loves me to death. We’ve been married 4 years now and I love him more today than when we said I do. Ladies…when people say “marry your best friend” they could not be more right! No matter what you go through or what life brings, you will conquer it all because you have your best friend by your side. Raymond is everything to me and I feel so incredibly grateful and blessed to have the kind of relationship and marriage we have. He is so much more than the man I dreamed, prayed and cried to the Lord about.
Thanks for reading our love story, I know it’s long and if you read it all thank you! I would love to know how you are your boyfriend/fiance/husband met. Leave me a comment below with a short story I would love to read it.
Thank you to our friend Leticia for taking these photos.
